Lay Buddhists have the opportunity to experience monastic life for one day and one night. This retreat offers peace, tranquility and mindfulness in daily life and encourages self-cultivation.

Date: November 22 (Saturday)

Time: 9:00am-9:00pm(After returning home, continue your practice until the next morning.)

Location: Hsi Lai Temple (map)

Audience: Devotee, Fo Guang Members & anyone who is interested in practice

Objectives:

1. To allow lay Buddhists a chance to practice traditional Buddhist etiquette.

2. To allow lay Buddhists a chance to experience the monastic lifestyle.

3. To allow lay Buddhists a chance to purify the mind and encourage self-cultivation.

Eligibility:

1. Must have right understanding and right beliefs on Buddhism.

2. Must be willing to accept the experiences of the Buddhist monastic lifestyle.

3. Must be in a good physical and mental health.

4. Must keep Noble Silence throughout the Retreat (no talking/chatting with others at all).

5. Must be between the ages of 16-75 without supervision needed.

6. PREREQUISITE: Must have previous and full attendance to a prior FGS retreat. If you have never gone on an FGS retreat, you will not be accepted. This is NOT a beginner's retreat.


Notes:

1. We will email you a week ahead and check if you will be able to make it for the entire retreat 8am to 9:30pm. You must reply to that email in a timely manner (by 11/18) to confirm your seat.

2. Check in on Saturday, November 22, 2025, 8:00am-8:50am.

3. Please do not bring with you any items of great value such as jewelry etc.

4. Uniform will be provided. Please wear Black Arhat Shoes (if you have them) or flat-soled shoes. Do not wear backless sandals. White socks are required (brand labels are ok).

5. This precepts retreat will last for one full day and night. All participants are respectfully requested to attend the entire session on November 22 without leaving midway.

To accommodate more lay practitioners, a special arrangement has been made to allow returning home for the night.

However, please note that participants must uphold the Eight Precepts until sunrise on November 23 (approximately 7:00 AM), at which point the precepts are naturally relinquished, and one may then resume ordinary lay life.
