2026 Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple Triple Gem Refuge and Five Precepts Ceremony


I. Objective:

Taking refuge in the Triple Gem is the foundation of practicing Buddhism, while receiving the Five Precepts and upholding the Ten Wholesome Deeds are the basics of all precepts. Through upholding the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts, we will receive the blessing of the Triple Gem, purify our body and mind, recognize our pure intrinsic nature, and discover the value of life.


II. Qualification:

All lay men and women with the resolve to take refuge and receive the Five Precepts in becoming Buddhist followers. One may choose to only take refuge or take both.


III. Date:

Saturday, May 23, 2026, 9:00 am- 11:30 am (Check-in 7:30 am)

• 7:30am – 8:50am: Check-in
• 9:00am – 9:20am: Ceremonial Training
• 9:30am -11:30am: Ceremony & Group Photo
• 11:30am – 12:00pm: Receiving Certificate
  

IV. Triple Gem Refuge & Five Precepts Seminar

May 16, 2026 (Sat)

9:30am – 10:15am (Check-in at 7:30am)

This seminar is MANDATORY for ALL participants as participants will receive their registration letter.


V. Instruction on Wearing the Hai Qing (Black Robe) & Precept Robe (Brown Robe)

May 16, 2026 (Sat)

10:30am – 10:30am

@ Hsi Lai Temple

This class is MANDATORY for participants who are taking the refuge and precepts for THE FIRST TIME as participants will learn how to wear their Hai Qing (Black Robe) & Precept Robe (Brown Robe) properly.


VI. Continuous Learning related to the Ceremony:

Heart Sutra Recitation & Transcription

May 30 (Sat)

• 7:30am – 9:00pm (7:30am check-in)

VII. Registration Letter:

You will receive the registration letter on May 16, 2026 when you attend the Triple Gem Refuge & Five Precepts Seminar.

IX. Other:

1) For renewing precepts, please bring your own precept robe (brown robe).

2) For the new Five Precepts preceptee, please bring haiqing (black robe), wear white/plain top, black/dark pants, and black arhat shoes or flat-soled shoes.

3) Please do not bring with you any items of great value such as jewelry etc.

Donation are welcome. Suggested donation for precept robe ($25US)
